In these days of individualism and economic stresses, the practice of home-making has been somewhat modified but basically it remains what it used to be in ancient times. Today also the home is the basic social unit, and a careless or clumsy housewife is nowhere respected. In recent times home-making, or home economics as it is called – has been given an important place in the curricula of educational institutions of all grades, from the nursery school to the university level. One of the main recommendations of the Secondary Education Commission appointed by the Government of India was that proper facilities for teaching home science must be provided in girls’ schools. The Union Ministry of Education has, therefore, included this subject in the syllabus of multi-purpose schools. The study of home sciences is the study of "home and family". An ideal home can be considered as a heaven on earth. The holiest temple is not the building used for the worship of a God but the home, the first school for the child. Right education begins emotionally and not intellectually. The early education of the child is in the hands of his parents and his family. Because of this home science has been introduced as a separate subject of study in all the centres of learning. This work, in three volumes contains highly useful and encyclopaedic information on all fundamental issues pertaining to home science.
