This book entitled 'Environment and Sustainable Development' has a great contemporary significance. Basically, the concept 'Sustainable Development' is multi-faceted one involving scientific, economic, political, social and legal dimensions. Therefore, different authors have published books on the theme of sustainable development with different perspectives. Most of the books are with scientific and economic component. So far, there is no single book authored by an Indian which presented the legal and political perspectives of the concept sustainable development with special emphasis on North-South dynamics. To that extent, this book enjoys singular merit. This book comprises of seven chapters. First chapter (Right to Environmental Protection) draws the philosophical and jurisprudential contours of the right to environmental protection. Second chapter (Sustainable Development-An Analysis) is a pure conceptual analysis. Third chapter (Principles of Sustainable Development), in a way is ancillary to the second chapter in that it discusses about the principles of sustainable development like polluter pay principle, precautionary principle, Intergenerational equity, common but differential responsibility and right to development etc. Fourth chapter (Third World Diplomacy at Stockholm & Rio) describes the apprehensions of the Third World about the goal of environmental protection. Fifth chapter (Barriers to Sustainable Development-Selected issues from the Third World Perspective) too is Third World oriented which identified and discussed the select issues of poverty and population as barriers for the goal of Sustainable Development. Sixth chapter (Trade & Sustainable Development), contains the most raging theme of contemporary times which is bringing North/South dynamics to its hilt. Seventh chapter (Transition to Sustainability-Operational Approaches) projects few integrational, developmental and equity approaches as perceived by the author to be necessary for transition towards sustainable development.
