The most striking factor of environmental degradation has been the anthropogenic activities instead of natural causes. The environment has capacity to recover the imbalance by its own in natural course, but the disturbance in environment equilibrium caused by human activities cannot be recovered by natural process. As such there is need of protecting the environment by checking environment hostile activities. The hue and cry for sustainable development is in the same spirit. It has been predominant assumption that development efforts necessarily go against the environmental equilibrium, hence development should be sustainable. It finds place in the millennium goals too. In this context the issues like people’s awareness, their education towards environmental protection, meeting the sustainable ways of poverty alleviation, consumption pattern, and so on come to the fore. Besides, sustainable development, globalization (changing consumption pattern) and environmental education are the most significant issues to be discussed. With this hunch in mind, the present book intends to provide a discourse on environmental education and sustainable development.

As such the book is divided into three parts namely environmental education and people’s awareness, understanding sustainable development (not theoretical examinations rather examination of various dimensions of the sustainable development) and sustainable development in context of globalization, global perspectives and problems faced in general.
