Issues of the global environmental protection and management were raised in the 1972 at Stockholm and that meet triggered off a number of initiatives by many countries to reverse the environmental degradation that they faced. In 1992, representatives of over 150 countries met in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for what is popularly known as the "Earth Summit". It established important linkages between environment and development, it fleshed out the concept of "Sustainable Development" which has since dictated the development agenda and facilitated cooperation between governments and non-governmental organizations on environmental protection and management. The Rio declaration brought home the reality of a "global commons" and an urgent need to arrive at a global understanding to protect the world environment and shared resources. The summit set out general principles for sustainable development and the climate change treaty, the convention on biodiversity and the framework of principles on conservation and use of forests established important steps that needed to be taken to guarantee an environmentally stable and sustainable planet. Over the last decade, although many things have changed, much remains the same because some developed countries have not altered their attitude significantly for environmental protection and management. The present book contains thirteen chapters dealing with the issues of global environmental protection and management, ozone layer depletion, climate change, biodiversity conservation and international political agreements to save the global environment. Special features of book include environmental conservation in the Indian sub-continent and formulating green policies for sustainable development. It is hoped that this book will be useful to the teachers as well as students and generate enough interests to inspire the inquisitive mind.
