Electoral Politics has become a major field of study in contemporary social sciences. Though India’s north eastern states have been keenly observed by journalists, scholars and policy makers because the politics of these states seem to challenge some of the major theories of Indian democratic politics yet serious efforts at electoral analysis of the region have rather been limited. Electoral politics of contemporary north east have been dominated by the issues of ethnic identity. This volume closely examines the role of ethnic conflicts in electoral politics of Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Apurba K. Baruah
Apurba K. Baruah, Professor of Political Science in North Eastern Hill University and coordinator, Lokniti North East was educated in Dibrugarh and Punjab. He has authored many books, important among which are Systems Analysis in Political Science: A Marxist Critique of David Easton and Social Tensions in Assam: Middle Class Politics. He has been contributing to journals like Economic and Political Weekly, Frontier, Punjab Journal of Politics, and Indian Journal of Human Rights and a large number of edited volumes. He co-edited North East Quarterly, a journal of Social Science Research from 1982 to 1987 and is currently on the editorial board of Indian Journal of Human Rights. His current interests are students movements, ethnic conflicts and democratic politics.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Rajesh Dev
Rajesh Dev teaches Political Science at Women's College, Shillong and was a guest lecturer to the Department of Law, North Eastern Hill University, Shillong. He had been a UGC Senior Research Fellow at NEHU for his doctoral research. Besides being a contributors of essays to edited volumes and journals like the Economic and Political Weekly, he is one of the Editors of Ethnonarratives: Identity and Experience in Northeast India. Dev contributes to regional and national dailies and has been a Resource Person for IGNOU and the NCERT. He is currently the State Co-ordinator for Meghalaya of the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies' Lokniti Programme. He was associated with the Crisis States Programme of the London School of Economics and Political Science.
