Though the rural Credit Survey committee has brought into limelight the problems of the rural finance, the Regional Rural Bans Ordinance 1975 proved to be a landmark in restructuring the rural infrastructure by providing easy and cheap finance to the small marginal farmers, agricultural labourers, artisans and the small entrepreneurs in the rural areas. Since the problems of employment is becoming more and more acute and the service sector is nearly stagnant and industry sector has a narrow scope, the employment opportunities can be better explored in the rural segments. The book besides highlighting the aims and objects of the Regional Rural Banks scheme presents a vivid descripti0n of the working and performance of the Prathma Bank, Moradabad, which is considered to be one of the ideal Regional Rural banks in the country. The author has covered the relevant aspects of Regional Rural Banks like branch expansion, deposit mobilization, credit deployment, profitability etc. and has given practical suggestions for improvement . Problems like lack of banking habits among rural public, competition with other financing institutions, recovery of advance, defective management pattern, untrained staff, limited resources, etc, have also been discussed along with suitable remedial measures. An effort has also been made to assess impact of these banks on rural economics as well as to the readers in general.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Rakesh Kumar Agarwal

Dr. Rakesh Kumar Agarwal (b. 1953) did his M.A. (Economics) in 1974 from Agra University in Ist Division, Standing II in order of merit. He was awarded Ph.d. by the Rohitkhand University in 1988. After Post graduation, he joined U.P. Higher Education Services and served as lecturer in govt. Raza Post-Graduate College, rampur for a couple of years, currently he is a senior lecturer in the Economics Department of the Post-Graduatek Studies and Research, Govt. Post Graduate College, Ramnagar (University of Kumaun). Dr. Agarwal has contributed about a dozen research papers in the journals of national and international repute. He has also undertaken a few UGC research projects. His areas of specialization are Banking, Finance and Monestry Economics.
