Vacha team shares stories of girls that they have interacted with in the course of their work on issues of girls and girlhoods. The girls in this book are from poverty affected families who have migrated to Mumbai in search of a livelihood. There are stories of girls from scheduled castes, nomadic community and religious and linguistic minorities.
The stories are in two categories. Some stories have emerged from two action researches Vacha had conducted in the period 1998 to 2006. This projects covered many areas from all over Mumbai. Some others are about girls with whom we work directly in bastis and schools. Both are chosen by randomly from a larger collection. For reasons of privacy we have changed names and a few other details. The main objective of sharing these stories is to visibalise the situation under which girls in bastis live and study.
