This volume deals with the family Scoliidae which belongs to Aculeate Group of Hymenoptera. It forms one of the most important Ectoparasitoid Group of Hymenoptera. This group constitutes more than 17% of the world fauna. The member of this family are commonly known as hairy wasps, usually black in colour, marked with spots or bands of yellow, white or red. Their wings are usually with metallic iridescence. The vestiture varies from black, white to entirely golden or reddish. These wasps in length may range from 5 to 50 mm. This volume deals with two tribes of subfamily Scoliinae of the family Scoliidae. The other subfamily Proscoliinae is restricted to Greece and Armenia. The Scoliinae is represented by tribes : Campsomerini and Scoliini. As a result of this study 79 species/subspecies under 19 genera have been reported from Indian subregion. Of these, eight species and five subspecies are new to science. This fauna volume will help in identification of various species, their distribution and relationship with other allied species. It is hoped that many of these may be economically exploited for the control of noxious insect pest species.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR J.K. Jonathan

Dr. Joseph Kenneth Jonathan has been engaged in the study of Hymenoptera since 1965 and has published several revisionary papers and monographs on their taxonomy, zoogeography and distriution. In pursuance of his research on Hymenoptera, has conducted extensive and intensive surveys to various parts of India. Dr. Jonathan was awarded Ph.D. degree by University of Delhi, Delhi in the year 1971 for his work on the “Taxonomic revision of the Genera and species of Goryphus-complex (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae)”. Dr. Jonathan joined Zoological Survey of India in 1973 and has served in various capacities for nearly three decades at the Hqrs. Of ZSI Kolkata. He has also published four important manuals used for various training programmes organized by the Survey. Dr. Jonathan has retired as Additional Director, in June, 2002, from the Zoological Survey of India, Kolkata.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR S.K. Gupta

Dr. S.K. Gupta (b. 1945) passed M.Sc. (Physics) 1967, M.Ed. in 1971 and obtained Ph.D. Degree in Education in 1974 – all from the University of Kurukshetra. A senior University teacher having nearly two decades of professional standing, he is on the Panel of Experts for Reviewing books for the reputed Journals. A prolific writer, he has five well acclaimed scholarly books to his credit including Guidance an Counselling in Indian Education (1985), Exploring Mental Abilities for Science Talent (1990). Currently Dr. gupta is a Reader in Education at the North Eastern Hill University, Nagaland Campus, Kohima.
