Social theories of womanhood in India has been critically examined in this book. Fundamental object of feminist sociologists is to be analysed gender relation – how gender relations are constituted and experienced and how we think or do not think them? The redefinition of gender theory in contemporary India has required a redefinition of the concept of womanhood and their public functioning. In this process, the emancipation of woman and equality with man have been important but not the main issues. The study of gender relation is not limited to what are often considered the distinctively gender issues – the situation of women and the analysis of male domination. Gender theory by itself cannot clear such space without feminist political action theories which are inadequate and ineffectual. However, we have believed that the further development of feminists theory also depends upon locating and theorizing within the drawing more self-consciously upon the wider philosophical contexts. Besides the conceptual development of the social theory of womanhood, we have also described the nature of cruelty against women and its preventive steps taken by government and non-government agencies. Various issues which are related to the female exploitation and women’s emancipation have been discussed in detail in this book.
