ABOUT THE AUTHOR Ajit Kumar

Dr. Ajit Kumar did his M.A. from Deccan College, Pune University, P.G. Diploma in Archaeology from School of Archeology, ASI, New Delhi and PhD from Tamil University, Thanjavur. He started his vareer in the Archaeoliogical Survey of India. Today, he heads the Department of Archaeology, University of Kerala, Trivandrum, founded by him in 1997. His field of interest included archaeology, art history and rock-art studies. He has presented papers in several national and international seminars and conferences. As part of his academic work he has also visited counties like Iran, Sri Lanka and Italy.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Vivekanand Jha

Vivekanand Jha, former Director, Indian Council of Historical Research, edited the Indian Historical Review (20 vols, 1974-94), making it India's most substantive historical jorunal. He also edited Itihas (Hindi), Vols I-III (1992-94), and co-edited Indian Society: istorical Probings (1974), as well as the Journal of Studies on Ancient India (1998) of the World Association for Vedic studies. One area of his scholarly interest has been the early history of the Untochables (the theme of his doctoral thesis, 1972), on which he has published several papers. He has also published studies of the Bhagavadgita. In 1990 he presided over the Ancient Indian section of the Indian History Congress.
