The science of creation of herbarium started way back in the 16 century when Luca Ghini developed the first Herbarium. Ever since then, there has been remarkable progress both in the areas of collection of plant specimens and the techniques that have been adopted through research over the years for enhancing the storage life of herbarium specimens.
The current approaches for the use of state-of-the-art technology for collection of specimens from various groups of plants, their preservation, identification and nomenclature, methods of documentation of information on plants and management of herbaria and other relevant areas associated with herbarium techniques and research are comprehensively covered in this well illustrated manual.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR H.B. Singh
Dr. Huidrom Birkumar Singh, Ph.D. (b. 1970), has graduated in Botany honours from D.M. College of Science (1990), Manipur University, & M.Sc. Degree in Botany (plant systematic) from the University of Kurukshetra (1993). He worked on rangeland in the Sikkim Himalaya and got his Ph.D. Degree in 2001 from the University of North Bengal. His research experience includes the work done in Botanical Survey of India on ethnobotanical studies of North Eastern India (1995-96); biodiversity & ecotourism study for which he worked in G.B. Pant Institute of Himalayan Environment & Development (GBPIHED) under a sponsored program of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), USA & subsequently with International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada (1996-2000). He worked for a brief period of six months in GBPIHED on biodiversity characterization through remote sensing and other GIS information under a program of the Department of Space, Govt. of India (2000). Presently, Dr. Singh is Scientist “C†& In-charge in the Regional Research Laboratory (Jorhat), Manipur Substation, Imphal. He is currently working on aromatic, medicinal & other economic plants of Manipur.
