Present volume is an endeavour towards bringing together widely scattered and diffused information on ethnic Indian flavouring and fragrant plants from disparate sources to form a highly structured work of reference to the world at large. As many as 625 species of plants belonging to 331 genera under 121 families have been enlisted alphabetically by genera and species, of which 3 species (3 genera) belong to Algae, 23 species (11 genera) to Lichens, 3 species (2 genera) to Pteridophytes, 16 species (9 genera) to Gymnosperms and 580 species (356 genera) to Angiosperms. For easy comprehension by laymen and specialists alike, the data given in each species include correct botanical name, synonyms, family, English, Sanskrit, and Hindi names, distribution, part/s used, procedural details of utilisation, active principles and the original source of information for authenticity in most cases. By and large, the flavouring and fragrant plants belong to Lamiaceae (56 species), Apiaceae (35 species), Zingiberaceae (35 species), Asteraceae (31 species), Rutaceae (28 species), Rosaceae (27species), Liliaceae (19 species), Lauraceae (17 species), Myrtaceae (14 species), Poaceae (13 species), Brassicaceae (12 species), etc. For familiarizing the reader with flavouring and fragrant plants, colour photographs have been included in the text. It is earnestly hoped that the synthesis provided will certainly bridge the gap between the traditional users and scientific fraternity and also it can be put to use for commercial exploitation in the Country.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Parul Gupta
Parul Gupta is one of the renowned costume designers in the country. She laid foundation of courses related to Fashion and Home Science in many Private Institutions in India. She is actively associated with teaching research and consultancy. She has guided more than 15 groups in deciding their costume outfits. A few corporate with whom she has worked are JK Export House, Leela Export Group and Delight Fashions. She holds a Graduate Degree in Commerce from Delhi University and Pursuing Masters of Business Administration from one of leading university of United Kingdom. Prior joining of Master Degree she has obtained various Diplomas and International Certificates in Fashion Technology. She has participated and presented her collections in various Exhibitions and seminars of repute.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR S K Sood
Dr. S.K. Sood is Professor of Botany at the Department of Biosciences, Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. He obtained his M.Sc. (1974) and M. Phil. (1976) from Himachal Pradesh University and Ph.D. (1981) from Nagarjuna University, Guntur, specializing in Plant Systematics and Embryology. For his post-doctoral, he underwent specialized training in Ethnobotany. He has had a brilliant academic career followed by over 25 years of teaching and conducting research in Botany at Postgraduate as well as research levels. Dr. Sood has guided about 10 M. Phil and 12 Ph.D. students and published numerous research papers in various national and international journals. He has attended and participated in many seminars, workshops and conferences. He is also associated with many educational and research bodies in India and abroad. A prolific writer, his book Ethnobotany of Cold Desert Tribes of Lahoul-Spiti (N.W. Himalaya): Deep Publications, New Delhi, 2001, was widely acclaimed. His current major interests are in the theory and practice of systematics, flora of North-West Himalaya, ethnic tribes and conservation research.

Suresh Kumar teaching in Department of Botany, M.M.H. College, Ghaziabad. He has been teaching graduate and post-graduate classes since 1997. Recently he has submit the thesis for Ph. D. degree.
