Forest management for sustainable development has raised several issues, both environmental and economic nature. Ancient Indian economic thinking had always championed the cause of ecological balance and judicious forest management for social welfare. In India forests constitute more than 20 per cent of the geographical land mass.

Considering the crucial importance of the subject, the CSESD organised an international seminar on this theme.

The present volume contains 36 selected presented/contributed papers, distributed over five sections. The first section deals with the general and theoretical issues of the subject and contains eight papers including the key note paper by Clement A. Tisdell, from Australia, who emphasised on the optional use and conservation of forests. The section two of this volume consists of three articles dealing with various approaches of forest management. The section three deals directly with the theme in the context of India and contains as many as ten papers. The fourth section of this volume is on specific issues related to sustainable forest management in India and consists of four articles. The fifth and last section of the book is on country-specific and regional studies on sustainable forest management and consists of eleven articles.
