Forestry is wealth of our country. Forest plant protection is chronic problem and necessary for sustainable development of our country. Indian Ghats are amongst world hot spots of biodiversity and home for many endamic, rare and endangered species of plants and animals. The Lepidopteran pests in their larval stage and in some cases adults are destructive to forest plants Larvae cause damage by boring stems, fruits, seeds, roots and defoliating and mining leaves of forest trees. Therefore, knowledge on their identification, biodiversity, biology, nature of damage, host plants and control is must to protect and conserve forest wealth. The book contain seven chapters. First is devoted for general introduction to forestry Western Ghats, and Lepidopteran moths. Second is devoted for collection and preservation of pest moths. Third chapter deals with biology of Lepidoptera (Moths and butterflies). Fourth is related to pest Lepidoptera and their control measures. Fifth embodies biodiversity of pest moths of forest. Sixth is devoted for check list of moths along with host plant records and seasonal abundance while, seventh chapter refers to bibliography referred. The book is stimulatory and useful guide to students, teachers, environmentalists, ecologists, entomologists and silviculturist in India and abroad.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR T V Sathe
Dr. Sathe Tukaram Vithalrao [M.Sc., Ph.D., Sangit Visharad, IBT (Seri.), F.S.E.Sc., F.I.S.E.C.], Professor in Entomology, Department of Zoology, Department of Zoology, Shivaji University, Kolhapur has teaching experience of 22 years in entomology. He is contributory teacher for M.Sc. courses in Department of Agrochemicals, Pest Management and Sericulture. He has published 165 research papers and 22 books viz., Preet Patangachi (drama, 1981), Crop Protection from Insects (Marathi), Sericultural Cropo Protection (1998), Biological Pest Control (2000), Cotton Pests and Biocontrol Agents (2001), Insects Pest Predators (2001), Sericulture and Pest Management (2001), Agrochemicals and Pest Management (2003), Insect Predators and Pest Management (2003), Vermiculture and Organic Farming (2004), Basic Entomology (2005), Fundamentals of Beekeeping (2006), Forest Entomology: A Textbook (2008), etc. He guided 15 Ph.D. students, completed 4 major research projects (from CSIR, UST, UGC). He visited Canada (1988), Japan (1988), Thailand (2002, 2004), Spain (2005), France (2005), South Korea (2006), Nepal (2007) for academic work. He is member of editorial board of several journals in India and involved in T.V. programming of butterflies and moths. He has published several popular articles in daily newspapers and delivered talks through All India Radio. He got several prestigious awards "Environmentalists of the Year-2003", "Bharat Jyoti Award-2006", "Jewel of India Award-2006", "Lifetime Education Achievement Award-2006", "Lifetime Achievement Award-2007", "International Gold Star Award-2007", "Eminent Citizen of India Award-2007" etc. He also got fellowships from several scientific societies.
