This book is an absorbing and romantic description of the life of a South Asian in India, Pakistan, and North America. The author presents a picturesque account of the lifestyle, customs and mores of three generations of a middle class family in Delhi. Syed Habib Ahmed also writes about the partition of the Indian subcontinent and his own migration to Pakistan, and a year later to the US where he worked with the UN. The author gives a fascinating, insider’s description of UN practices and operations, both at the headquarters and out on UN field missions while visiting many countries of South and East Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.
