Biotechnology is a recently developed domain of research involving new techniques that have ar8isen out of interdisciplinary interaction and comprises genetic engineering immobilization of biocatalytic systems, cultivation of animal, plant and microbial cells, development of used cell techniques and bioengineering processes and systems. The Chapters cover practically all aspects of plant biotechnology, which is now considered the solution of acute food arises by growing of crops needing less water, disease resistance crops, high yielding varieties, combining the traits of two or more plants in a single plant and genetic engineering. Biotechnology provides the answers to many problems, which the world is facing today, and would continue to do so tomorrow. This book explores many vistas of biotechnology, which will be useful for scientists and students to understand the latest techniques and processes of biotechnology research.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Amla Batra

Dr. Amla Batra, nationally and internationally known in the field of biotechnology, is Professor in the Department of Botany and Principal, University Maharani's College, University of Rajasthan, Jaipur and has worked extensively on cell, tissue, organ and protoplast culture and gene introductions in renowned laboratories of the world under prestigious fellowships like BARC, Trombay, Bombay; German Academic Exchange Programme (DAAD), Germany; FMI Ciba Geigy, Switzrland; and Carstens Seed Company, Germany. Besides having the honour of these fellowships, she has had the opportunities to visit certain well known universities (North Carolina, Duke, Chapel Hill, Berkley) in the USA, France, Holland, Singapore, Canada etc. as a visiting scientist. She has done in-depth research work with internationally acclaimed academicians such as Late Prof. Arya, Prof. H.Binding, Prof. thomas Hohn, Prof. Ingo Potrykus, Prof. W.O. Abel, and Prof. Rudolph and many more. Her work on cell and protoplast culture, their isolation and fusion in lower as well as higher plants has brought her a special name in this field. Her works have been published in journals and books of national and international repute. The continuity of her research in the field of biotechnology, particularly in the specialized area of protoplast culture, has earned her recognition throughout the globe on account of which she has been twice conferred with the prestigious GTZ, DAAD award (in 1991 and 1996). Besides, two dozen of students obtained their Ph.D. under her able guidance, many more are still working for their Ph.D. under her supervision. She has recently received Vijay Shree award. She is the member of many national and international scientific societies. She has been handling various research project sanctioned by BARC, CSIR, DST and other funding agencies.
