n Fungal Disease Resistance in Plants, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Genetic Engineering, loading authorities in botany, plant breeding, and plant pathology share their expertise to help prevent outbreaks of crop diseases caused by fungi. Heralding exciting new advances in molecular biology, biochemistry, and genetic engineering, this informative book will help researchers, professors, and students further their understanding of plant defenses. This book presents vital information on: The hypersensitive response-and its role in disease resistance; Induced plant resistance to fungal pathogens; Cellular expression of resistance to fungal pathogens; Pathogenesis-related proteins and their roles in resistance to fimgal pathogens; Signal transduction-plant networks, delivery, and response to fungal infection; Fungus genes as they relate to disease susceptibility and resistance.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Zamir K. Punja

Zamir K. Punja, PhD, is Professor in the Department of Biological Science at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia. He previously worked for the Campbell Soup Company as a research scientist working on vegetable pathology/biotechnology at various research facilities. He has published over 110 peer-reviewed journal articles, six review papers, and twelve book chapters covering the areas of plant pathology, plant tissue culture, and genetic engineering of plants for disease resistance. He is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Journal of Plant Pathology. Dr. Punja’s research interests include the development of methods to manage fungal diseases on vegetable crops, with emphasis on the applications of genetic engineering and biological control methods. He served as President of the Canadian Phytopathological Society (CPS) and is a member of numerous professional societies, the British Mycological Society, the American Society of Plant Biologists, the Mycological of America, and the International Tissue Culture Association.
