By way of capturing the emerging scenario of the periphery zone of the planned city of Chandigarh, the book fills a gap in literature produced in the spirit of futuristic geography. At the centre of the whole exercise is the testing of the efficacy of the Punjab New Capital (Periphery) Control Act, which was legislated to retain the overwhelmingly rural character of the tract up to 16 kilometers from the city’s project site. The act stands violated and periphery is now five times more urbanized than what it was at the time of delineation. The vulnerability of the periphery vis a vis the dynamism of the core gets confirmed. Who was responsible for this and what is in store for the periphery in future?
