Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib, who has been compared to Goethe by Iqbal is one of the most beloved and endearing of Urdu poets. Since his death a hundred years ago, countless editions of his poems have been published. In the first section, Ali Sardar Jafri, one of the greatest litterateurs in Urdu, has given a brief biographical sketch of Ghalib and an appreciation of his personality and poetry. There follows translation of excerpts from Ghalib’s letters. In the second section, some of the most beautiful couplets and ghazals of Ghalib from Urdu as well as Persian are rendered into English by the distinguished writer Qurratulain Hyder. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Ali Sardar Jafri

ALI SARDAR JAFRI- Urdu poet and critic whose work has been translated into many foreign languages - winner of the Soviet Land Nehru Literary Award for his book of poems Ek Khwab Aur; Editor, Hindustani Book Trust, Bombay. He has edited and published works of many classical Urdu and Hindi poets, including Ghalib, Mir, Kabir and Mirabai. He was the recipient of the Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowship (1969-70) and worked on the imagery in Urdu poetry which was to be published in six volumes both in Hindi and Urdu. Unfortunately, this great man is no longer amidst us. He passed away in the year 200O.
