Geography of Maharashtra presents a broad picture of the state of Maharashtra at the beginning of the 21st century. The essays presented here are intended to further our understanding of Maharashtra’s physical, economic and cultural landscape. The volume is divided into three parts. Part I The Physical Environment contains papers describing the physiography, climate, soils, forests and wildlife of Maharashtra. In Part II an overview of the Economic and Cultural Landscape of the state is given. The articles included in this part highlight the status of agriculture, industries, population growth, urbanization and road and rail transport. The variations in physical and socio-economic aspects of the state, which are reflected in their unique geographical personalities, are described in Part III on Regions of Maharashtra. The volume, thus, addresses the needs of a wider readership, including students, researchers and planners.
