This book is the outcome of a research study carried out by WSDC, University of Delhi. The alarming decline in child sex ratio in the northern states of North India has generated a lot of concern among activists, development practitioners and academicians. The centre devised an empirical study to make an assessment of attituditional difference towards the girl child in today's society. The study confirms a sutle bias towards the girls in our society but also reflects a change in mind set where girls are given opportunities to realise their potentials.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Nilima Srivastava

Nilima Srivastava has been working with the Department of Social Work, University of Delhi. She did her Master's in 1981 from the same Department and her Doctorate from Lucknow University in 1993. She is activily involved in research in the field of Family and Child welfare and has been contributing through her articles and research papers in print media of the profession.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Vibha Chaturvedi

Dr. Vibha Chaturvedi is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Delhi. For more than two decades she has worked and written extensively in various academic journals on a range of diverse philosophical issues. These areas include philosophy of religion, modern western and analytic philosophy, gender issues and philosophy of mind. Her earlier book 'The Problem of Personal Identity' had dealt with complex philosophical issues relating to definition of personal identity in terns of psychological/ physical continuity. Dr. Chaturvedi had a brilliant academic career. After teaching for few years at Lucknow University, she moved over to Delhi University in 1983. She has been a fellow of I.C.P.R. twice: 1987-88 and 1991-92. She has also been a fellow of I.C.S.S.R. in 1993-94. Currently, Professor Chaturvedi is engaged in research on 'Karma, Freedom and Responsibility in Classical Indian Philosophy.'
