The present volume is an attempt to fill this lacuna. There are altogether the biographies of more than 60 composers in the present publication begining from Jayadev, the author of the immortal Gita Govinda down to Papanasam Sivan of the present century. The selection of authors has been made with the consideration of their erudition and standing in the field of music. The sotry of Indian music is largely the story of the different composers who have enriched it in diverse ways. As such the present volume portrays a cogent history of music in the context of the contributions of different composers who flourished from the 12th century down to the present day.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR G. Kuppuswamy

Dr. Mrs. Gowri Kuppuswamy is currently Professor and Head of the department of Vocal Music of Mysore University. She has several Research Publications and Papers to her credit. She has been research advisor and guide to several Ph.D. candidates of the Mysore University. In vocal music she has received training under Sangeeta Kalanidhi late G.N. Balasubramaniam, Sangeeta Kalanidhi Padmabhushan Dr. M.L. Vasanthakumari and Sri S Salyanaraman. She is also the Member of Board of studies and Examinations of several South Indian Universities. She has also widely traveled on Concert and Lecture assignments to U.S.S.R., Bulgaria, Hungary, Europe, U.S.A., Canada, U.K., France, Singapore and Malayasia.
