The present study is an attempt to bring together in a systematic and analytical form, the main outlines of an evolution of Indian social thought. It is also designed to meet the needs of the reading public which has not made an actual acquaintance in a historical way with the social thought of India right from the pre-historic to the recent times. The study is presented here in a critical manner. The analysis of the history of the Indian social thought is interpreted firstly, as a constant struggle between the forces of social determinism and the forces of social dynamism, and secondly, the theory of social determinism has been legislated away in principle and replaced by the philosophy of social dynamism as conceived in the constitution of India. This struggle is the main feature of the glimpses of India’s social thought and even today, it continues in various ways. The Indian social thought is considered here both as an expression of the times in which it appeared and as a stimulus to its day and age. The history of social thought has unprecedented possibilities for throwing light on the solution of social problems of agitating nature, and thus, an attempt has been made to point out some of the relations between human experiences as revealed in the evolution of India’s social thought and the possible treatment of the baffling social problems of the present generation.
