Present day science philosophy is moving towards a new synthesis of science and humanities, including the diverse cultural heritage of mankind. In fact it is a synthesis and unity of all knowledge which helps understand problems of our civilization. Leading scientists including Professor Iliya Prigogine in his book Order Out of Chaos and Stephen Hawking in his book A Brief History of Time have promoted a unity of all knowledge and harmony in society and with nature. This book which is the proceedings of a national seminar makes an attempt for the synthesis of various scientific disciplines, as also a synthesis of science and culture and spiritual heritage of Kashmir. Leading Scientists, Scholars and Fellows of National Akademies took part in a seminar organized on 7th April 2002 by Kashmir Education, Cultural and Science Society in Pamposh Enclave, New Delhi, who provided major ideas and trends in research in various modern scientific disciplines as also the trends and focus of Kashir’s composite, cultural philosophy and spiritual heritage. This heritage is represented for example by Kashmir Saivism, which along with Sufism, is known world over because of great scholars and seers of Kashmir’s past like Lal Ded, Nund Rishi and Abhinav Gupta being associated with it. Professor M.G.K. Menon the distinguished scientist of India delivered the inaugural address. He said there is harmony between science philosophy and Kashmiri Philosophical and cultural heritage. This book should be of interest to scientists and public at large as it makes an attempt to provide a synthesis of modern science and spiritual and cultural ideas of Kashimr.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR S.K. Sopory

Prof. Sopory is the Head of the Plant Molecular Biology group at the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), Delhi. He had his earlier education till M.Sc. in Srinagar. He did his Ph.D. at the University of Delhi. Prof. Sopory has worked in various Institutions abroad; Max-Planck Institute, Koeln, and University of Munich, at Germany and at the University of Texas and United States Department of Agriculture, Beltsville in USA. Before joining ICGEB he was Professor at the Jawaharlal Nehru University at Delhi. He is the recipient of Bhatnagar Award, Birbal Sahni Award, and other awards and is also the Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, The National Academy of Sciences, Indian Academy of Sciences, and the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences.
