It has become imperative on the part of water scientists and planners to adopt techniques for quantifying the available groundwater resources for sustainable development and management keeping in mind the scarcity of available water resources versus its demand in the near future. The apparent heterogeneities and complexities present in the hard rock aquifers makes it a challenging research to tackle groundwater problems. The intricacy increases manifold for the management of groundwater when the hard rock aquifers are situated in arid or semi-arid regions. The demand/supply gap has led to the over abstraction of the groundwater and water level depletion in many areas beyond economic exploitation.
The Indo-French Center for Groundwater Research (IFCGR) at Hyderabad, India has taken this challenge and using a suitable pilot site with all the requisites for studying hard rock aquifers present, has surveyed and experimented extensively a typical granitic aquifer present in a semi-arid and monsoon climate agricultural area. The present book contains the results and findings of the advanced research carried out in the pilot area with a thorough investigation of the structure and functioning of the aquifer in such a formation. The various chapters arranged in the book start from a very general scenario of the water resources management in the country, an extremely technical contribution on the hard rock aquifer system, its characterization, theoretical portion of its properties and behaviour that has been necessary to enter into the environment. A brief description of various experiences of studying the hard rock aquifers globally has been included to provide a much wider experience. The rest of the book has very systematically included the geophysical, geological and remote sensing applications to conceptualize such an aquifer system. The basics of the hydraulic tests, conducting various types of examinations for parameter estimation in such aquifers including their up-scaling with modern interpretation techniques are embedded. Another chapter has been included describing the water budgeting and balance in granitic aquifers using the specific methods for their estimation. A major parts covers the advanced techniques of geostatistics and aquifer modelling right from the basics and then demonstrated by suitable case studies. Finally a few examples have been included on the hard rock aquifers from extreme North and also from the South of India with case studies to complete the matter for its readers. The reader of the book will find comprehensive knowledge with suitable examples to investigate a hard rock aquifer for characterization of its flow properties, estimating water balance and finally aquifer modelling for groundwater management including the theory of regionalized variables. Colour diagrams wherever necessary have been included for clear understanding.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Abdin Salih

Dr. Abdin M.A. Salih, obtained his Ph.D from the Imperial College of Science and Technology, University of London (U.K), 1972. His field of interest is environmental sciences, particularly hydrology (including groundwater), hydraulics, and water/land resources management under arid conditions. He has worked extensively in renowned Universities like University of Padova, Italy; Colorado State University, USA and King Saudi University in Riyadh. He has served as an advisor in many large national water and environmental research projects. Dr. Salih is a serving member of UNESCO’s Advisory Board of the Great –Man-Made River of Libya (1990 to date); and led a multidisciplinary team in 1986-1990 to study and solve the engineering and environmental problems related to the rising groundwater beneath the City of Riyadh (Saudi Arabia). He has published over 75 papers and chapters of books in various journals and proceedings of referred conferences and prepared over 30 technical reports. 

ABOUT THE AUTHOR R Jayakumar

Dr. R. Jaya Kumar has Ph.D. in Hydrogeology with Post Doctoral experience in conjunctive use of surface and ground water for irrigation. He has specialised in application of remote sensing, GIS and geo-statistical in hydro-geological modelling with a special training in related fields from Osaka City University, Japan. He has worked for the UNESCO, New Delhi, looking after hydrology, and coastal and small islands programmes and later as a Hydrogeologist with Ford Foundation Project in Anna University, Chennai and as a Hydrogeologist with WS Atkins International Limited, Cambridge, UK in Irrigation Projects funded by Commission of European Communities. At present he is working in UNESCO Beijing office, China looking after the Science and Technology programme of UNESCO.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Shakeel Ahmed

Dr. Shakeel Ahmed (born 1958), basically a geophysicist from India, completed his higher studies at Paris School of Mines, France and obtained degrees of DEA and Doctorate as well as Diploma in Geostatistics. Presently serving as Deputy Director of National Geophysical Research Institute, Hyderabad, Dr.Ahmed started his research career by working on an advanced subject of aquifer modelling for groundwater management and geostatistics as well. He is presently heading the Indian team at the Indo-French Centre for Groundwater Research (IFCGR), an advanced research centre (www.ifcgr.net) where scientists of NGRI, India and BRGM, France are committed for research in hard rock hydrogeology. With about 50 research papers in various journals and many proceedings to his credit, he has edited five published proceedings of international conferences. Dr. Ahmed is recipient of the Young Scientist Award in physical sciences for the year 1996 from MAAS as well as International Prize of Water Sciences of 2004 awarded by the Cannes Water Symposium, France.
