This volume is the first is a series of endeavors by the India China Institute at The New School, New York, to create a space for trilateral conversations on the emerging issues of globalisation, urbanisation, political economy, development and governance that can enrich and expand intellectual collaboration across diverse disciplines in India, China and the U.S. It presents shifting perspectives on urbanisation ans globalisation in India and China over the past few decades, at the dawn of this new era when both countries are actively removing barriers to reach out to each other and the rest of the world.

It is hoped that this volume will prove to be the frontrunner in stimulating productive dialogue that is bereft of preconceived notions and misconceptions and focused on asking the right questions and finding the more elusive answers. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Ashok Gurung

Ashok Gurung is the founding Director of the India China Institute and a Faculty member at the Graduate Program in International Affairs at The New School. Ashok’s research and teaching interests include project design and development management, capacity building, inequality, environment, and inclusive democracy. Prior to joining The New School, Ashok was the program officer at the Ford Foundation, and an Adjunct Professor at Columbia University. He holds an MA in Economic and Political Development from the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University, and a BA from World College West, California.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Brian McGrath

Brian McGrath is Associate Professor of Urban Design at Parsons The New School for Design. He is the author of Digital Modeling for Urban Design and the co-author of Cinemetrics: Architectural Drawing Today and Sensing the 21st Century City: Close Up and Remote. His work has received many awards including the Prix Ars Electronica for Manhattan Timeformations, and has been published internationally in numerous journals. He is editor-in-chief of Nakhara: Journal of Environment and Urban Planning, published at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand, and co-editor of Scapes, the Journal of the School of Constructed Environments at Parsons.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Jianying Zha

Jianying Zha is the China representative of the India China Institute. A writer and media commentator, she is the author of five books, including China Pop and the award-winning The Nineteen Eighties. Her writing has appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, Dushu, Wanxiang, and other magazines and newspapers. A recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, she received her MA from Columbia University, and her BA from Beijing University. She is finishing a new book on China.
