Environmental pollution has made the sky a virtually overloaded sewer, fertile land a waste land and river a poisonous sink. Thus, environmental pollution is a major hazard facing the world today and there is an increasing awareness of the fact that a clean environment is necessary for smooth living and for the better health of human beings. The environmental education and pollution control has drawn major concern in the recent years at national and international levels. Unfortunately, there is lack of awareness about the environmental issues among masses. Hence, in order to protect the environment and sustainable development, the right assessment of the ecological changes for the best use of global resources requires the spread of environment education and pollution control techniques at war footing. This volume dealing with pollution control in metallurgical, mining, cement, thermal, radioactive, soil, marine, mechanical, electrical, electronics, and instruments for controlling pollution is the second volume of Handbook of Industrial Pollution and Control. This volume is divided into six sections and provides a fairly comprehensive coverage of the multidisciplinary nature of pollution and environmental aspects. Section I explains fundamental aspects of metallurgical and mining industries. Various pollution prevention aspects related to ferrous and non-ferrous industries (iron, steel, aluminium copper and zinc) are also discussed. Section II focuses on cement, ceramic and allied industries which contribute to air pollution in the form of suspended particulate matter and gases, such as oxides of nitrogen and sulphur dioxides. Section III is devoted to thermal and radioactive pollution. Radioactive pollution poses a serious threat to the environment and future generations. Section IV explains soil and marine pollution which have become a global problem. Section V concentrates on mechanical, electrical, electronics and allied industries. Metal fabricating plants generate combination of contaminants during metal removal, metal forming and metal finishing. Section VI goes on to miscellaneous topics such as role of biotechnology in environmental protection, instruments for measuring pollution, environmental management systems, environmental impact assessment, environmental auditing and pollution control laws and acts. This reference textbook also includes a glossary of technical terms, list of pollution control equipment manufactures, references and index. This reference textbook is intended for the practising chemical, mechanical, metallurgical, civil and public health engineers, industrial chemists, research students and students undergoing postgraduation in environmental sciences.
