ABOUT THE AUTHOR Abhijit Paintal

Abhijit Paintal (b. 1946) is an alumnus of St. Edmund's College, Shillong, and the Allahabad University from where he obtained a Master's degree in Zoology. He taught in various schools and other institutions before joining the Indian Forest Service. He has acquired a creditable reputation as a keen wildlife scientist and advocate of ecology. His 1989 publication on Equity and Ecology: Survival of the Species earned him much acclaim. He has written over two dozen papers on subjects of related interest and has also been associated with national and international ecology and wild-life preservation groups.
