Recent explosion of interest in traditional medicines has been driven by the accelerated loss of indigenous plantlore, consideration of indigenous plantlore as national heritage, natural products research, new drugs derived from plants and becoming of western medicine more open to alternative approaches to healing. This interest has become episodic in nature and therefore needs many fora or platforms to disseminate the products of research in this regime. The present book is hoped to serve the same purpose. This book contains 22 articles on different aspects of the subject reflecting views and thoughts of experts. It incorporated articles on traditional plant uses in family welfare, wound care, diabetes and skin affliction, ethnobotanical or ethnomedicinal plants from West Rarrh (West Bengal), North Gujarat, Jharkhand and Western Orissa, ethnotherapeutic leads from tribals of Orissa, ethnomedicinal leads from modern drug development programmes, parasitic angiosperms from mythology to medicine, graphic review of ethnobotany in Chhatisgarh and veterinary medicines of Gond tribals (M.P.). It also covers topics on development and standardization of herbal medicine, methods of tribal drug purification, ethnomedicinal uses of neem and traditional knowledge with particular emphasis on ethnomedicine/traditional medicine. Articles on recent approaches in phytochemical and biological importance of Calendula officinalis, in vitro anthelmintic activity of Bauhinia species, in vitro regeneration, phytochemical screening, antibacterial activity and hypoglycemic effect of Ocimum sanctum are included. This book unfolds rich Indian traditional heritage and focuses on modern drug development in India. This book will be useful not only as reference book but will also cater to the immediate needs of students, teachers, research workers, herbal healers, pharmaceutical industries, botanists and ethnobotanists.
