In primitive human societies, the process of acquiring knowledge about plants and medicinal utility was initiated concomitantly. Later both diverged from each other. The former led to the foundation of plant science and latter to medicine. Medicine developed from the desire and effort to heal human ailments and as such, origin of medicine is natural and traditional. Knowledge of medicine gradually developed in some organized systems of medicine worldwide. These systems are based on their own theories, principles and practices. Indian medicinal system, Ayurveda, is a proud heritage of India. Although so, the treasure of Ayurveda has passed through the vicissitudes of time and various reigns. The present book is an attempt to collate information on herbs, generally mentioned in Ayurvedic literature and those found in the Maharahtra. Their chemical constituents, exact botanical identity, local plant names, parts used, phenology, besides properties and uses of drugs. It will be useful to the students, teachers, research workers in the faculty of medicine and science, apart from pharmaceutical industries and enthusiasts. About 450 plant species have been carefully presented to help enhance the science of Ayurveda in particular.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR D.A. Patil

Dr. D.A. Patil did his Ph.D. in 1983, from Dr. B.A. Marathwada University, Aurangabad (M.S.). He is Reader in P.G. Department of Botany, S.S.V.S’s L.K. Dr.P.R. Ghogrey Science College, Dhule. He was Chairman, Board of Studies in Botany and dean of faculty of science, North Maharasthra University, Jalgaon (MS.) He is a member of many prestigious academic and scientific societies. He is also a member of Editorial Advisory Boards for Journal of Life Journal of Advanced in Science and technology. He has significantly contributed in the field of research in taxonomy, floristic, plant anatomy, morphology, ethnobotany and etymology. He is recipient of Dr. M.S. Swaminathan award for the year 1999, awarded by Indian Botanical Society for publishing the best research paper. He has published 76 research papers in reputed national and international journals. He authored Flora of Dhule and Nandurbar District, Forest Flora of Jalgaon District (Maqharashtra) and A key to the Angiospermic families of North Maharashtra. He has guided six research students for Ph.D. degree. Recently, he received Scientists of the Year Award, 2004, awarded by national Environmental Science Academy, New Delhi.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR M.V. Patil

Dr. M.V. Patil obtained his Ph.D. in 2004 from North Maharashtra University, Jalgaon (M.S.). He is Lecturer in Botany at Gangamai Education Trust’s Arts, Commerce and Science College, Nagon, Dist. Dhule (M.S.). He is also member of B.O.S. in Botany and Faculty of Science at North Maharashtra University, Jalgaon (M.S.). He is an active research worker and has published 12 research papers in ethnobotany in national and international journals. He actively participated and presented research papers in national and International conference. Recently, he received an award for presenting the best research paper in ethnobotany at the deliberations of ‘National Conference on Plant Diversity and Biotechnology’ held at SSVPS’s L.K. Dr. P.R. Ghogery Science College, Dhule (M.S.)
