The emphasis of services veterinarians are providing to dairy clients has changed from individual animal disease and treatment to prevention of disease on a herd basis. The change in emphasis has required the veterinarian to expand into management expects that involve the entire dairy enterprise. The core element is a standard operational protocol to guide a practitioner of farm advisor providing herd health and production management services in the various operational management functions of a dairy enterprise.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR A Brand

He has graduated from the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Utrecht in 1956.  He worked as a food animal practitioner from 1956 to 1962 and as a researcher at the pharmaceutical company “Organon LTd” from 1962 to 1966.  He completed his Ph. D. at the Department of Obstetrics, Gyneacology and A I, Veterinary Faculty of Utrecht in 1970.  He is a Chair in Dairy Herd Health and Production Management at the Veterinary Faculty of Utrecht in 1979.  He is currently visiting professor at the Faculty of Veterinary Science of the University of Zimbabwe.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR J P T M Noordhuizen

He graduated from the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Utrecht in 1975.  He was employed by the Veterinary Faculty of Utrecht in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology from 1978 to 1980 and worked in a mixed animal practice to 1981.  He joined the Department of Herd Health and Ambulatory Clinic of the Veterinary Faculty of Utrecht in 1981 where he finished his Ph. D. in 1984.  He is since 1988 full Professor in Animal Husbandry with emphasis on Animal Health and Reproduction at the University of Wageningen, The Netherlands.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Y H Schukken

He graduated as DVM at the Veterinary Faculty of the Utrecht University, The Netherlands, in 1985.  He completed a M. Sc. in Veterinary Epidemiology & Biostatistics at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York.  He finished his Ph. D. on dairy cattle mastitis epidemiology at the Veterinary Faculty of the Utrecht University in 1990.  He is currently Associate Professor in dairy herd health at the department of Herd Health & Reproduction of the Veterinary Faculty of Utrecht University.
