The book is primarily addressed to practitioners who, I am sure, will appreciate the emphasis on practical relevance rather that on scientific rigor.  Business researchers, finding some widely accepted views challenged will, I hope, be encouraged to delve more closely into these issues.  I owe thanks to the many who supported my work.  First and foremost, I would like to thank the founders, owners, and managers of the hidden champions for granting me innumerable hourse of stimulating discussions and learning experiences.  I thank the German Research Foundation for generously supporting the project form 1993 to 1995.  Echart Schmitt, my research assistant, a highly competent, intellectual sparring partner, contributed immensely to the effort in all its phases, for which I am deeply indebted to him.  I am also grateful to my colleagues at Simon, Kucher and Partners, Strategy and Marketing Consultants, for many inspiraing, insightful, and challenging discussions on the strategic issues addressed in this book.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Hermann Simon

Hermann Simon is the chairman and CEO of Simon, Kucher and Partners, Strategy and Marketing Consultants in Bonn and Boston and a visiting professor at the London Business School.  He has also held positions as a professor of management and marketing at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, the scientific director of USW-The German Management Institute in Cologne, and the chair of management and marketing at the University of Bielefeld.  Fellowships and visiting professorships have taken him to the Harvard Business School, the Sloan School of Management, Stanford University, INSEAD, and Keio University.  A former president of the European Marketing Academy, Simon is a member of several supervisory boards and a trustee of numerous corporations and foundations.  He also sits on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Research in Marketing, Recherche et Applications en Marketing, and several scientific journals in Germany.  Simon has written Price Management: Theory, Strategy, Goodwill and Marketing Strategy, Pricing Strategy for New Products, Thinking Management: Companies with Visions and Price Management (co-authored in Korean with Professor Pil H. Yoo), and Thinking Management: Companies with Visions (in Japanese). He is also the editor of numerous books published in Germany. Simon’s articles has appeared in American, British, Dutch, French, German, Hungarian, Italina, Korean, Japanese, Polish, Russian, and Spanish journals.
