The Historic Heritage Sites of the World are central points in the story of human history. Chosen for the almost undefinable quality of greatness, these sites together act as a sort of chronological, geographical map through the world’s most admired civilizations. Through each site has a unique history, a style as distinct as a fingerprint, these chosen 104 sites, share some of the same attributes. Almost all have been centers for either commercial, political or cultural power. They have existed as magnets for great people, great heroism and great ingenuity. Each of them have developed a unique style that aesthetically defines the value of a culture or the greatness of mother nature. Together, these places create a picture of human civilization. Their evolution can be compared, contrasted and explored. Every day, in every corner of the world, works of great beauty and important are being lost forever… the misconception that monuments will always be with us, since they have endured for centuries, has had-and continues to have-tragic and irreversible consequences. The great Sphinx of Egypt may soon be, quite literally, gone with the wind; the ancient city of Angkor could be swallowed by the jungle. More recently, we have seen that destruction of cultural icons can be a potent political weapon. Whether it be through the slow but inexorable work of erosion and the elements, or the dramatic destruction wrought by an earthquake, a bulldozer, or a stick of dynamite, every day, in every corner of the world, works of great beauty and importance are being lost forever.
