Historical research in India is on the upsurge, yet relatively little has been written about its development and prospects, questions of supreme importance to all those concerned with Indian history. The papers here published were presented at two seminars organised by the Heras Institute of Indian History and Culture in its Golden Jubilee Year, 1976. In the first, on "The Guidance of Historical Research," the selection of students and of topics, and the direction of research work were carefully discussed. In the second, on "The Future of Historical Research in India," the theme was treated by leading figures from various sectors of the research world. All lovers of Indian history, and research students and guides in particular, will find this a most interesting and useful little volume.
