The region lying between the rivers Krishna and Tungabhadra had always been a home of history and legend. Particularly the medieval period in the history of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka was dominated by this fortress town strategically located. Today the ruins speak of its past glory and civilization. In this book, an attempt has been made to bring to light the historical significance of the Raichur Fort. The book consists of several chapters providing a historical backdrop to the region. The inscription studied in the book are analysed and also transliterated. The architectural features and a descriptive account of the structural monuments now extant inside the fort supplemented with maps and plates gives a vivid picture of the fortress town to the reader. The book is the result of arduous fieldwork of the author, which makes the work not only authentic but also useful to the researchers working on the history, and antiquities of ‘regions’ and ‘places’ in Deccan. Today, Raichur town is a district headquarters in the Karnataka State. Until 1st November 1956 the place was a part of the erstwhile Hyderabad State. The place has a cultural a tradition and special features of its own which are well narrated in this book.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR V Suguna Sarma

Dr. V. Suguna Sarma was born in Raichur Town. She had her school and collegiate education at Hyderabad with a brilliant academic record securing several medals in the school and a Rolling Cup at the College. She obtained the M.A., M.Phil and Ph.D. degrees from the Osmania University, Hyderabad. She also holds a Diploma Certificate for a short term Museology Course conducted by the Salar Jung Museum, Hyderabad. Besides, she has undergone a P.C. Software course in Computers. She is associated with several Academic bodies and Institutions and is a life member of the Andhra Pradesh History Congress. She has attended several National and International Seminars and presented informative research papers. She has also contributed several interesting Articles to well-known Research Journals both within the country and abroad. The author has also published a fascinating book om textiles entitled “Studies in Indian Textiles”. Currently, Dr. Suguna Sarma is working for the Department of Archaeology and Museums, government of Andhra Pradesh, Hyderabad. She has surveyed the remote villages of the Anantapur, Kurnool and Cuddapah districts in Andhra Pradesh for collecting data in connection with Preparation of Directory of Monument being brought out by the Department. She is continuing further research in different branches of History and Archaeology.
