The region lying between the rivers Krishna and Tungabhadra had always been a home of history and legend. Particularly the medieval period in the history of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka was dominated by this fortress town strategically located. Today the ruins speak of its past glory and civilization. In this book, an attempt has been made to bring to light the historical significance of the Raichur Fort. The book consists of several chapters providing a historical backdrop to the region. The inscription studied in the book are analysed and also transliterated. The architectural features and a descriptive account of the structural monuments now extant inside the fort supplemented with maps and plates gives a vivid picture of the fortress town to the reader. The book is the result of arduous fieldwork of the author, which makes the work not only authentic but also useful to the researchers working on the history, and antiquities of ‘regions’ and ‘places’ in Deccan. Today, Raichur town is a district headquarters in the Karnataka State. Until 1st November 1956 the place was a part of the erstwhile Hyderabad State. The place has a cultural a tradition and special features of its own which are well narrated in this book.
