In focus here are the Mizos — an ethnic community, largely inhabiting the present-day Mizoram – one of the seven states of north-east India. Notwithstanding their being the sons of the Indian soil, ethno-culturally, says the volume editor, they are strikingly similar to the tribes of Southeast Asia. The origin of the Mizos, like those of many tribes in the northeastern India, remains shrouded in mystery. This book examines afresh the questions of Mizos origin and their ethnic identity formation. Essentially a collection of over 40 presentations of an international seminar, the volume also focuses on Mizos’ early history, pre-Christian religion, beliefs, traditional political institutions, values, marriage customs, kinship, economy, and development history, among several other themes.
