Simple, lyrical and profound, I am the Dewdrop, I am the Ocean is a collection of jewel like prose pieces and poetry. Culled from the artist’s diaries and an inspirational monthly column, Zen Black, Zen White, which appears in First City magazine, this book includes a selection of short stories, vignettes, anecdotes, haikus and free flowing verse, all interspersed by minimal brushwork and calligraphic strokes. Starkly minimalist images of mountain, bird, budding shoot and cloud accompany the writing in parts. Rendered with a pristine, Zen-Like discipline, the drawings imbue the word pictures with sudden and sharp life-breath. Spontaneous and direct, Gupta’s writing is honed and shaped much the same way as his sculpture-the final outcome is a chiseled and spare imagery. This is a book for healing-a veritable bible for all to delve into in moments of despair; a book that allows the mind to experience moments of silence, grace and joy.
