Can the gulf between dream and reality ever be bridged? This question haunts many of the characters in this collection of stories by Deepa Agarwal. If the Earth Should Move… displays a deep insight into the inner world of women. Women trapped in the web of circumstance, their space restricted by social mores that prevent their dreams from taking concrete shape, who still manage to find alternatives. Often it is the past that serves to define the present, in stories like Cradle Song, Doorways without Doors and Why did you Kill Mahatma Gandhi? Sometimes myths are exploded and honds thrown off as in The Jewelled Serpent, or horrifying truths emerge as in The House of Cards. Compelling, disturbing, thought provoking, these stories span a wide range of human experience and light up dark corners of our lives with intensity and candour.
