This monumental work by Dr. Maheshwari is a welcome addition to the scholarship of the early medieval period. The author has drawn upon a vast body of first-hand observation of coin hoards, to offer us a fresh and compelling account of this most fascinating period of India’s monetary history. Having commissioned an extensive and ground-breaking series of metallographic analyses of the coins, the author is able to shed much light for the first time on the nature and function of these coins as a circulating medium. Technically sound and quite rigorous in methodology, the book is also an enjoyable read.
