In a backward region like Assam whose economy is predominantly rural in character, the study of economic activities in the rural areas calls for special importance. This the only pioneering study available in North east Region on the behaviourial relationships between income, expenditure, savings and investment in the rural areas of Assam and thereby getting an idea about the degree of ‘closedness’ of the village economics. This work is methodologically oriented and offers estimates of income distribution with reference to resources, productivity of those resources economic well-being of the rural people, savings patterns, reasons for and magnitude of rural indebtedness with the aid of appropriate statistical tools and techniques. A ‘Complete System’ approach to economic study of villages could unravel the functioning of and changes in the village economy including quantitative measurement of either economic self sufficiency or economic inter-dependence. The book fills up the grip in the analytical study in the direction of imparting a social accounting approach to rural economic research. Besides being a useful reference work for the post-graduate students majoring on agricultural economics, the book would provide much new information for experts who are interested in pursuing scientific study of the behavioural dynamics of rural economy in Assam. This should also be useful as a guide for a scientific and dispassionate understanding to educated farmers, executives and planners.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR K.C. Borah

Dr. Kumud Chandra Borah (b. 1948) after obtaining his Master's Degree in Economics in 1971 from Dibrugarh University, was awarded Ph.D. Degree by the said University in 1977. Dr. Borah was a UGC Research Fellow during the period of his doctoral studies. Dr. Borah served the Economics and Statistical Organistion of Arunachal Pradesh for a couple of years as a Statistical Officer. He lectured on economics at the B.A. HOnour's level in the Jawaharlal Nehru College in Arunachal Pradesh at Pasighat for about 3 years. During this period he also conducted two reserch surveys to identify the socio-economic problems of hill people of Arunachl pradesh. He currently lectures on Agricultural economics at the Post-Graduate level in the Department of Economics of Dibrugarh University.
