The book Environment seeks to convey to the public and younger generation in particular, an understanding of the achievements and failures in the field of air and water pollution control and the concepts that underlie the problems. This book is expected to improve the awareness of the activities which have been undertaken in the Country in the field of environment in general and to control air and water pollution in particular. The book consists of three parts. Part 1 introduces the reader to the concepts of air pollution followed by the appraisal of air pollution status in India. Part 2 introduces to the issues of availability of water, water scarcity, demand and supply followed by the appraisal of water quality of India. Monitoring networks and the problem of vehicular pollution and industrial effluents have also been discussed. Part 3 appraises the policy and legal instruments for the prevention and control of air and water pollution. It begins with tracing of history of pollution control legislation and institutional build-up for the environmental protection in the country. The important provisions of the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act. 1981 and Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 have been provided. It is hoped that this book will inspire the readers to seek more knowledge and to understand the importance of sharing responsibility, that will lead to preservation of the air and water resources in times to come. The book will also be of considerable interest to graduate and post graduate students.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR P.J.S. Dadhwal

P.J.S. Dadhwal, B.E. (Agriculture), LLB, is presently working as Member Secretary, Chandigarh Pollution as Member Secretary, Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee, and Scientist ‘SE’, Environment Department, Chandigarh Administration. He is working from last 15 years in the field of pollution control and prevention and has worked in Central Pollution Control Board and Himachal Pradesh Pollution Board. He has to his credit 10 research papers and numerous technical presentations.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR R.S. Saini

R.S. Saini, B.E. (Civil), M.E. (Environment), is presently working as Scientific Officer, Environment and has to his credit 20 research papers and communications. He has also teaching experience of 3 years at Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh and has been a guide to various M.E. dissertations. He is also an NABL, auditor.
