This volume introduces a new dimension to the understanding of India-Japan relations, thus far unexplored. Though a modest attempt, it is the first ever exercise to reconnect the past with the present in its various aspects other than merely political, economic and strategic. Both Japan and India have been great sources of culture and civilization in Asia and need to know more about each other. However, due to strong compulsions of global politics during the past century, no systematic efforts were made to delve into this realm by either of the State. In the wake of the new perception in the world and as much in Japan about India, the so-called sleeping giant, there is an increasing awareness in that country to develop multi-dimensional understanding about India to build a long term partnership in the global arena. In this endeavour, the Japan Foundation plays a pioneering role. The present volume is the result of its New Delhi Office’s contribution to the effort with the help of leading experts in the concerned field. Overall, the volume makes a passionate plea that Asians should find merit in evaluating the contribution of Asian values and see it through Asian and not Western eyes.
