Forest plays a significant role in the overall balance of carbon in the atmosphere mitigating or exacerbating the effects of global warming. Forest carbon sequestration can potentially reduce the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. They influence climate change largely by affecting the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. When forests grow, carbon is removed from the atmosphere and absorbed in wood, leaves and soil.
