This book seeks to examine the role of Indian Muslims in uprooting the British rule, with special reference to the Great Revolt of 1857. Presenting an overview of the uprising of 1857, it describes in detail the events that led to the uprising and the participation of the Muslims, particularly the theologians as their religious duly to uproot the British rule from the Indian subcontinent.

It also evaluates the contribution of the Wahabi movement, Faraizi movement, Ulemas and the Urdu press in the struggle against the British, with special focus on the role of Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar, Mohammad Bakht Khan, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, Mirza Ghalib, Maulvi Muhammad Baqar, Maulana Fazle Haq Khairabadi, Mufti Sadruddin Azurda Dehlavi, Maulana Faiz Ahmad Badayuni, and Maulvi Liaqat Ali Allahabadi.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Aijaz Ahmad

Aijaz Ahmad is a leading Marxist thinker, critic and commentator. Currently he is Visiting Professor at the Jawaharlal Nehru University. Among his celebrated books are: Ghazals of Ghalib (Columbia University Press, 1971; Oxford University Press, 1994); In Theory: Classes, Nations, Literatures (Verso, 1992; OUP, 1994) and Lineages of the Present: Political Essays (Tulika, 1996; Verso 2000).
