The book is a study of the basic features of the Indian social structure and the kind of social change that has been ushered in over the decades. It views aspects of the caste system, the joint family system, the role of women and their importance in Hinduism, human rights of Dalit groups and the educational system. The interesting work delves into the traditional God-fearing nature of people in Indian society and the impact of modernisation and globalisation on their traditions and values, especially their aping of the Western culture. It deals with social taboos and abuse in society, involving acts of domestic violence, abuse of children and homosexuality.

Dr. Madhulata Anand is senior professor of Sociology. Her academic progress is M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D., in sociology specialization, from Baroda University, Gujarat. Dr. Anand has directed a large number of sociology projects. Also she has meritorious record in her academic career.She has published more than 20 research papers to this credit which are published in different journals of repute. She has participated in many National and State level conferences and seminars and her research papers are published in the preceding volumes of those actively engaged in teaching and research in the area, Sociology at J.P. Mahila Arts College.
