India opted for planned development approach for its socio-economic development after attaining freedom from the colonial British Empire. During the last six decades of independent India, several experiments have been put to test for the attainment of economic development. There are opinions on the usefulness of various economic models which have been tried over the years. It is also noted that strategy of Five Year Plans have been the major efforts through which India tried to achieve its development. Whereas the debate is on, the present book makes an attempt to present an objective and rational analysis about our planned effort. Also, an attempt is made to examine the paradigm shift in the development strategy beginning from the decade of nineties and the consequences thereof. It is an attempt to trace the development journey of India through different paradigms and the consequences of those efforts. The book is based on the study conducted into two states i.e. Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh apart from other secondary sources collected for the purpose.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR S.N. Singh

Dr. S.N. Singh (b. 1941) formerly Professor in the Department of Public Administration, Lucknow University, is the Secretary of the Institute for Applied Research and Development, a non-governmental organization based at Lucknow. From 1980 to 1984 Dr. Singh was with L.B.S. National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie as Reader in Public Administration on deputation. His academic career covers a span of about four decades in which he has to his credit eight books already published. Two under publication on various important themes of social relevance. He has published more than 40 papers in the reputed journals. His experience of teaching, research and training for long years has enabled him to produce works which have been widely acclaimed. As Secretary of the IARD since 1995 he has been engaged in academic as well as social service activities. Under the banner of the Institute several activities have been organized since its inception.
