Noted historian, Dr Amalendu De (b.2 January 1930) retired as the Guru Nanak Professor of Indian History from Jadavpur University. A Scholar extraordinary, Dr De has rediscoverd the character of the Indian Renaissance and the nature of the Hindu-Muslim relationship through his research on the economic, political, social and cultural history of India and Bengal in the 18, 19th and 20th century.De’s findings on Indian Freedom Movement with particular references to the role of Sri Aurobindo in Indian National Revolutionary Movement  (1876-1947) and Gandhi’s views on religion and politics have re-interpreted some of the most significant chapters of Indian history.His work on Sri Aurobindo and Communalism have been translated into many languages, including Italian Japanese,This former President as well as General Secretary of the Asiatic as eneral has recently drawn attention of the scholars through his ‘Theological Discourses in Indian History.
