Indo-Myanmar (Burma) Ranges (IMR) have a distinct entity in the tectonic framework of Eastern Himalaya and the Southeast Asia. The IMR, which is thought to be northern prolongation of the Indonesian island are linking with the Himalaya possibly along the Tidding Suture Zone, is believed to have evolved due to subduction of the Indian plate below the Myanmar (Burma) plate. In the process, the range evolved as an accretionary prism of imbricate thrust system where obducted oceanic crust (ophiolites) has intermingled with the sediments. As a result, all geological, geophysical and tectonic features, unique and pertinent to a subduction plate boundary, are found in this range. In other words, the range is one to the best onland subduction plate boundary regions in the world serving as an ideal type area for both field and laboratory studies. In spite of all these interesting geological, geophysical and tectonic features, the region still remains as one of the least explored parts of the world.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Soibam Ibotombi

Dr. Soibam Ibotombi, Professor of Geology in the Dept. of Earth Sciences, Manipur University, born in 1958, graduated with Geology Honours (I Class, second position) from Gauhati University in 1979. He completed his M.Sc.in Applied Geology from University of Roorkee (now IIT, Roorkee) in 1982 standing first in the class (gold medalist). After completing the post graduation he joined the Geology from University of Roorkee (now IIT, Roorkee) in 1982  standing first in the class (gold medalist). After completing the post graduation he joined the Geology and Mining Division of the Directorate of Industries, Government of Manipur as Assistant Geologist in the same year. While serving as Assistant Geologist he also underwent the XI-Orientation Course for Geologists in the Geological Survey of India in the year 1986-87 securing distinction in the training. After the training Dr. Ibotombi joined the Department of Earth Sciences, Manipur University as Assistant Professor on deputation in 1988, where he was absorbed permanently thereafter. While working as Assistant Professor Dr. Ibotombi was awarded Commonwealth Academic Staff Scholarship and attended an advanced course on Applied Structural Geology and Rock Mechanics in Imperial College, University of London in 1992-93. After coming back from UK he carried out his doctoral works independently leading to the award of Ph.D. degree by Manipur University in 1999. His fields of interest include structural geology and tectonics, rock and soil mechanics, petrotectonics of ophiolites and allied aspects. Dr. Ibotombi has more than 25 research publications in the national and international journals of good repute.
