Small scale industries are recognized as instruments of social transformation, enlarged employment opportunities, broadcasting entrepreneurship and securing dispersal of industries. They have a strategic role to play in the economic development of industrially less developed countries like India. Small scale industries keep sprouting literally anywhere and everywhere. The consequent damage to the environment and to the society could have been minimised or eliminated. Polluting small scale industries have been growing in number both in Tamil Nadu as well as in Madural District. The present study takes into account two types of small scale units namely cotton-dyeing and electroplating which cause water pollution. Also it concentrates on two industries namely cotton-dyeing and soap manufacturing which cause air pollution. This work deals with the analysis of the environmental impact of various effluents on the workers employed in small scale units such as electroplating, cotton-dyeing, paint, soap and chemical manufacture. It is an effort to assess the economics of the growth of polluting small scale industries and their impact on environment.
